Polyester Resin [ COIL COATINGS & CAN COATINGS ]

Description

Polyester resins are a family of synthetic resins made through the reaction of dibasic organic acids and polyhydric alcohols. They are widely known for their rigidity, durability, and resistance to a wide range of chemicals and environmental conditions.

Polyester resins are broadly classified into two types: Thermosetting and Thermoplastic.
Thermosetting polyester resins are the most common and used for variety of application These resins cure irreversibly, typically activated by a catalyst or hardener.
Thermoplastic polyesters, which are used in a number of applications including beverage bottles, films, and textiles. They can be melted and reshaped repeatedly, making them recyclable and versatile for various manufacturing processes.

They are used in coatings, adhesives, and as matrices for composite materials due to their excellent bonding properties and resistance to environmental factors. With ongoing research and development, polyester resins continue to adapt, providing improved and specialized functionalities for industrial, construction, and consumer products.

Within the realm of coatings, polyesters forge powerful alliances. In industrial applications, polyester polyols, alongside butylated amino resins, undergo heat curing (stoving) to form exceptionally tough, chemically resistant films. And by reacting pending hydroxyls with isocyanates, we get polyester polyurethane films with exceptional hardness and water resistance, finding applications in coatings and inks.

Applications

PU Automotive Paint

The interiors and exteriors of trucks and cars feature many plastic parts. Depending on where the parts are located and what types of plastics are used, they may be protected with a variety of coating layers. Polyurethane (PU) systems provide a long-lasting, high-quality finish regardless of the number of layers.

Baking Alkyd Resin

Alkyd resins are manufactured from the condensation reaction between oil or polyols, acids, and alcohol. They are typically used as binders for coatings and printing inks. For lacquers in particular, nitrocellulose (NC) and CAB with excellent drying properties are used in combination with short oil alkyd resins that have low content of used oil.
